A new movement to save the CJ from extinction in California.

Tired, old CJs in failing health are unable to meet the current emissions standards, and are losing their place on California streets, roads, and highways. The only conceivable (affordable) solution available at hand is the conversion to a diesel power-plant, as both sides of the fence meet at the half-way mark. This is just the beginning.

Who we are.

Most of us are "Jeep Enthusiasts" of one form or another. (I've been hooked since my "Tonka Jeep" from Easter '63.) Some of us are die-hard off-roaders; others like to (legally) blaze dirt roads just outside our cities (while others still have yet to figure out what that "other stick-shift" is for).
We would like to hear your feedback, questions, and comments.

The Situation, in Detail.

The ECM (Emissions Control Module) which came with the CJ-7 & CJ-5, particularly, during the 1980s was of poor design, resulting in a mechanic's having to replace most smog fittings, and tinker with the vehicle extensively, such that it would pass the smog-check. As restrictions get tighter, and tighter still, and gas engines wear out, diesel-retrofits are a genuine prospect.

Engine/Transmission Selections.

So far, it appears that there a few options in terms of power-plant. The likely possibilities are:

The least likely selections are:

Other problems/stumbling-blocks include the weight-classification of the vehicle, itself in California, and the corresponding engine size. Depending on how a good of a mechanic one is (or how much dough they have to pay someone else to do the work), the conversion can be relatively easy to do, depending on availability of parts and components. More information to come in the near future.

Comparisons.

We are still acquiring data, which means that these comparison tables are not yet complete:

* Engine Comparison Table * Transmission Comparison Table * Engine Swap Info Page (Thanx, Tom!) *

Re-invention of the Wheel (And, How to Avoid Doing So).

Of course, there are those who have already dropped some sort of diesel powerplant in their Jeep.
We would be grateful for any information we could get our hands on: info@jeep2diesel.org  And thanks to those who already have been extremely helpful in providing us with data/information up to now

Those who have done so already.

Some Interesting Insight.

We would like to read more like this one:

"I converted my l981 Scrambler CJ8 to diesel in 1990 using an engine supplied for the South American Jeep market. They had factory installed bellhousings for the T176 4spd. trasmission. The engine is the ISUZU C240 4cyl.DIESEL! I get 29 MPG running 16" Michelen tires.I have seen conversions with the SD33 Nissan that the INT.SCOUT used.(way ahead of the times) The world drives diesel jeeps while America sleeps!"

Excerpt:

"Diesel engines are a great idea for Jeep swaps. However, they seldom materialize successfully past the idea stage. The lack of good, light-duty domestic diesel engines makes these swaps a discouragingly difficult process. Foreign diesels are usually quite advanced, but are difficult to find and maintain."

"...I undertook the task of rebuilding my Jeep YJ. This included full width 3/4 ton axles, a T-18 transmission, Dana 20 t-case with Spicer 18 gears, and the finishing touch- a 6 cyl. Volvo Turbo Diesel."

Excerpt:

"...DT, Cummins "B" series engines can be had with chevy or Dodge bell housing adapters and SAE housings. Advance Adapters makes a bell housing to adapt a chevy small block to your AX15. So it could be done. But The low end torque of the Cummins is sure to shorten the life of the AX15, I would vote for using a NV4500. "
